Applying AI and a circular approach to the agri-food industry can improve our economy, society, and environment. Consequently, this project will develop AI knowledge and skills to support the circular transition of the agri-food sector. The AISkills4CircularTransition project will examine the opportunities and threats that follow the new task force defining novel business standards through implementing a training program on the opportunities of AI and CE within the agri-food industry.
Alon Rozen is Dean, CEO and Professor of Innovation at Ecole des Ponts Business School, where he helps students and companies alike succeed in new business ventures.
After gaining an MBA at the venerable Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, Alon spent over 20 years in startups and consulting. Later, he began teaching to share what he learned along the way and further increase his impact. This led him to pursue doctoral studies with initial research dedicated to understanding the effects of globalisation on the French wine industry. Following this, he developed his unique framework called Dynamic Business Modeling, which was inspired by his research on business model innovation.
Working with corporate clients and students worldwide on innovation, his mission has naturally evolved into a growing passion for the circular economy and circular business models.

Sofia Hamika is a Quality Assurance and Stakeholder Engagement Manager at the Circular Economy Alliance, with a demonstrated history of working in the education management industry.

Joyce Halloun holds the position of Project Coordinator at the Circular Economy Alliance. Joyce is an accomplished businesswoman with over 10 years of experience in business development and logistics. At a relatively young age, she started her own businesses, Blue Grapes and J’s corner.
J’s corner is focused on sustainable development, zero waste management, eco-friendly products, functional health, holistic medicine, and ecological farming. Joyce’s passion for a circular sustainable life and an eco-friendly way of living has enabled her to inspire and influence her clients, while spreading awareness and educating about the importance of living an environmentally friendly life. Besides being a dedicated researcher for innovative concepts, advocating for international natural resources Joyce has also intensive experience with rapid response for humanitarian emergencies due to her past experience with international non-profit organizations as logistics and operation coordinator.

The maritime transport sector is responsible for more than 75% of the European Union’s external trade and is projected to grow in global shipping volume. A landmark study by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) shows that ships produce 13.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) caused by transportation in the EU. Other significant impacts of the sector include the doubling of the underwater noise levels in EU waters between 2014 -2019 and the introduction of half of all the non-indigenous species introduced into European seas since 1949.
In 1950 there were approximately 751 million people living in urban areas. According to the United Nations in 2018 that number rose to 4.2 billion or 55% of the world’s population. By 2050 the urban population is expected to rise to almost 70%. This places additional strain on countries to implement sustainable policies that balance the economic, environmental and social aspects, including resource management, sustainable infrastructure, housing, employment and basic services such as education and health care. Moreover, currently cities consume almost 80% of the world’s energy and produce more than 60% of greenhouse emissions (GHG) while the population density makes them particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change including flooding, see rise, wildfires etc.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the emerging technologies which can enable and accelerate the transition from a linear to a Circular Economy (CE). In view of this the European Commission through the EU HORIZON 2020 MSCA RISE programme, funded the CE-IoT project with a budget of EUR 1,692,000 and a duration of four years, from July 2018 to June 2022. The consortium is comprised of 6 partners including academic institutions, as well as consulting, information technology and telecommunication companies.
Wildfires, drought, flash floods… the world seems caught in perpetual struggle as global weather systems shift and change. The result is not just loss of life and property, but also a trigger for disease, molds, and pests that can wipe out entire crops in 48-hours or less. Hence the need for remote sensing (aerial-imaging), a rapidly improving technology that uses special cameras to detect, among other things, oncoming devastation before it’s too late. Currently, remote sensing uses three types of camera platforms: satellites, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and manned aircraft. All have their strengths and weaknesses.
A new collaboration between the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) and Circular Economy Alliance (CEA) aims at preparing Cyprus for a transition from a linear to a circular economy. CEA will be providing educational resources for upskilling and reskilling the workforce of almost 8000 enterprises represented by CCCI. The collaboration means that 95% of Cyprus’ businesses get access to the skills to safeguard the competitiveness of the country’s products and services during the green transition. Cyprus could in fact be the first country in the world to transition to the circular economy on a national scale.

The Circular Economy Alliance platform, services, and products are designed to appeal to and be used by people from a wide variety of different backgrounds, countries, religions, and cultural norms. These diversity and inclusiveness are core values of the CEA, and we encourage our Community to embrace it and share it. That said, this geographic and cultural diversity can make effective communications and general policy definition a bit challenging.
That said, CEA is committed to advancing the transition to a just and inclusive Circular Economy which aims to decouple economic growth from resource use, eliminate waste by design, and tackle climate change. The CEA Code of Conduct reflects the ethics and values of the Platform, product, services, and community. It has been prepared with members of the CEA community (the Community), content contributors, instructional designers, and administrators based on established best practices. With the involvement of our stakeholders, we will continue to update the Code of Conduct as we add new products, services, and activities and as we receive feedback from our learners and community members.
We cannot foresee all eventualities and align with all local regulations, so the Code of Conduct should indicate the nature of interactions and the social dynamic we would like to see on this Platform and within the Community. Mary Vitsa is an expert devising and executing robust organizational policies and HR strategies to promote organisational development and increase companywide performance. With a strong financial acumen gained through an Economics and Business degree from The Open University UK, numerous executive trainings, solid knowledge of employment law and compliance processes, Mary has the ability to identify organisational issues and barriers to employee productivity, and recommend corrective actions. Change and project management certified, she has been leading diverse teams, and exercising an advisory role to CEO/executive management. After spending nearly two decades working within the EU institutions, public and private sector alongside executive and operational teams, Mary knows what truly drives successful outcomes, and it’s not a one-size-fits-all strategy. Dr Marios Prasinos holds a BSc degree in Computer Science (University of Crete, Greece, 2010), an MSc degree in Engineering-Financial Systems (National Technical University of Athens, University of Piraeus, Greece, 2013) and a PhD degree in Computer Science (City, University of London, UK, 2019). His research interests include policy making, health informatics, data mining, machine learning, decision support systems, big data, ontologies, smart cities and circular economy. Dr Prasinos is an experienced researcher with strong academic background and has worked in various research projects, undertaking both research activities and software development tasks. Beyond research, he has worked in the Software Industry as consultant, software engineer and project manager for more than 6 years. Since 2021, he is a member of the Circular Economy Research Center (CERC) of Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC) and a research fellow of Circular Economy Alliance, where he works on the research projects of the company and the development of new proposals.

Chrysostomos Adamides is a critical thinker who enjoys tackling challenges in new domains. He is currently working towards the implementation of the Circular Economy to help create a just, inclusive, and sustainable future. His main area of focus is stimulating organizational transformation and the transition to circular business models through the development of the skills and competences of the workforce. He works as a specialist with the Circular Economy Alliance and as a researcher with the Circular Economy Research Centre at Ecole des Ponts ParisTech.
Prior to joining the Alliance, Chrysostomos worked for several years as part of the European Commission’s field team for the development and implementation of migration management action plans. In this capacity, he contributed to improving the health care provision and reception conditions for migrants in Greece and Cyprus.
Chrysostomos holds an ALM in Sustainability and an MSc in Finance. Chrysostomos comes from the island of Cyprus and currently lives with his wife in Athens, Greece.
Ushma is a Communication Officer at Circular Economy Alliance.
She is a passionate media professional and has over 7 years of experience in digital media. She holds a Master’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communication with a specialization in Broadcast Journalism and various diplomas including a Diploma in Journalism from the University of Art London. Her expertise is in the area of content creation, video production and building communities for brands.
She started her career in 2013 working as a content creator and social media manager for various brands and local businesses. During her college, she has done multiple internships in different sectors of media like Radio, News channels, Advertising agency and a leading production house where she worked for multiple shows of NDTV and HISTORY channels.
After completing her masters, she joined a leading digital content platform named Wittyfeed as their Content Producer and Host. She produced and hosted over 200 episodes of different shows which includes various brand integrations, campaigns, outdoor events, and celebrity collaborations.
She has a strong interest in related topics related to fighting climate change and the circular economy. Her goal is to expand her knowledge and skills and be able to contribute to making this world a better place.
As a result of 10+ years of diverse professional experience, Matthew Greenley offers research, strategic planning, and international project management skills. Over the years, he has partnered with both government and industry leaders to promote the circular economy concept and principles.
Matthew strives to apply the full range of his abilities in all that he does. He has been a research fellow at CERC since late 2020, and assists in the development of the Circular Economy Alliance, along with circular economy-related research and projects.
He has been the Director of International Cooperation at the Institute for Research in Circular Economy and Environment since 2014, where he has established partnerships with local and international universities. Some partners included the Romanian Government, the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee – created to promote the circular economy concept within Romania and throughout Europe.
Alessio Franconi, PhD, is a designer and researcher who focuses on the intersection between circular economy, design strategies, industry 4.0 and the Product Service-System. He currently holds the dual role of researcher at Brunel University London and the Circular Economy Research Center, Ecole des Ponts Business School.
Alessio is part of the CircularMetal Research Center at Brunel University London – one of five transdisciplinary circular economy centres sponsored by the UK Research and Innovation’s Strategic Priorities Fund programme. In 2018, Alessio was selected by the Fulbright Italy commission to participate in the prestigious Fulbright-Fondazione Simone Cesaretti fellowship, which enabled him to further his doctorate studies at Rochester Institute of Technology – Rochester (NY, USA).
Alessio has experience in industrial design consultancy for large companies such as Indesit, JP Industries, and many small and medium-sized businesses. He also has many years of international academic research experience across multiple universities.
In 2016, Alessio was recognised as one of the first Blue Economy experts by Professor Gunter Pauli at the University of Pécs. He is also the creator and curator of www.circulardesign.it – the first open-source tool for organising and managing circular design strategies.
Georgia Solomou is a highly motivated, target driven individual, with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Sciences and a Master’s degree in International Relations. She has always been interested in politics and the significant impact that significant decisions and historical events have had on people and the planet.
With more than 12 years of experience, Georgia is a powerful force in the workplace. She assumed a leadership role as the Head of the Administration Department, and as the Data Protection Officer of the Company for which she previously worked.
She became Project Coordinator at CEA, and her techniques, skills, and mindset quickly brought enormous value to the organisation. Georgia embraced the history of the Circular Economy Alliance and our culture and vision of the future. She is pleased to join the team and be a part of this exciting journey towards a green, digital and more resilient planet.
Following his studies in Engineering and Computer Science, Saman started his career in Information Communication Technology (ICT) in 2000. After ten years of cross-industry and international experience designing digital infrastructures, solutions, and platforms, he redirected his career and completed an MBA in Paris and New York.
Pursuing his passion for purpose-driven and value-centric initiatives, Saman started his doctoral studies and focused on Circular Economy and Sustainable Competitiveness. In 2020 he completed his Executive Doctorate in Business Administration on the convergence of Technology, Circular Economy, and Competitiveness. Saman’s work as a professor, researcher, consultant, and advisor revolves around the same three pillars.
He is passionate about leveraging digital transformation to deploy CSR, SDGs, ESG, and Circular initiatives. As a result, Saman works on emerging trends to design and implement competitive business models, value chains, and economies.
Saman is the Associate Dean and COO of École des Ponts Business School. He is also the Head of Programs and Instructional Design, and a professor of Technology Management, Digital Transformation and Innovation for Circular Economy. Saman works with the Circular Economy Research Center (CERC), Center for Policy and Competitiveness (CPC-Paris), and the Circular Economy Alliance (CEA) as a Senior Researcher, and the Senior Advisor of Technology and Business Modeling.
Chiara Battistoni is an Italian industrial and Eco and Systemic Designer. With a PhD in Management, Production and Design, she focuses on the relationships between Systemic Design and Circular Economy. Her area of expertise is the manufacturing sector, where she adopts the ecosystem approach.
From 2015 to 2020, Chiara has developed research activities with the Systemic Design Research Group in Architecture and Design. She was also the assistant teacher of the course ‘Systemic Design’ in Politecnico di Torino, and she has collaborated in many European projects, such as RETRACE, led by Politecnico di Torino.
In 2021, Chiara started to collaborate with the Italian startup Mercato Circolare as a project officer. There, she scouts European projects, writes proposals and oversees the project’s finance. She is a circular economy specialist here at Circular Economy Alliance.
Vlatka Katusic is a senior researcher at Circular Economy Research Center, managing, coordinating and writing proposals for European projects. She is also a circular economy specialist at CEA, developing content for a body of knowledge in the field of the circular economy.
Vlatka has over ten years of experience as an environment and sustainability specialist for several small-medium sized consultancy firms. Her expertise includes design and implementation of communication, dissemination, training, exploitation and long-term sustainability strategies, facilitation of public consultations, social dialogue, mediation, and negotiations.
After graduating with an MBA in Innovation Management in 2019, Vlatka immediately embarked on a doctorate research journey at Ecole des Ponts Business School in Paris. On top of this, she holds an MSc in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development and a Bachelor of Law.
Vlatka loves working in multidisciplinary, collaborative and international environments – sparked by her working travels across Bolivia, France, Croatia and Cyprus. She is thus interested in supporting international cooperation, aiming to close the idea-action gap for sustainability to implement circular economy principles.
Dr Hernan Ruiz Ocampo is a senior researcher at the Circular Economy Research Center (CERC) and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC), where he manages, coordinates and writes proposals for European projects.
Hernan obtained his PhD in Process and Bioprocess Engineering at the Institut Mines-Telecom Atlantique in Nantes, France. His research was part of an industrial project to develop new technologies for an SME in the water sector. This experience convinced Hernan of the importance of applied research to the industry to improve business performance. Thus, after getting his PhD, he worked as an innovation manager to develop international strategies to export green technologies.
In 2019, Hernan graduated with an MBA in Innovation Management at the Ecole des Ponts Business School, acquiring knowledge in leading innovation and agility, design thinking, and digital transformation.
Hernan has a rich multicultural experience acquired by studying, living and working in Bolivia, Cuba, France and Cyprus. Besides his PhD, he holds two master degrees in Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Urban Environments Techniques. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.
Hernan’s research currently focuses on applying and identifying circular strategies in different industrial sectors. He also contributes to developing a body of knowledge to empower the workforce towards the transition to the Circular Economy.
Jonathan T. Scott is a teacher, entrepreneur, and manager, with over 28 years of business and higher education teaching experience in 17 different countries. As a manager, he has been recognised for tripling productivity, increasing net profits by over 55%, and leading three successive business turnarounds.
Currently, he is a senior research fellow at Ecole des Ponts Business School’s Circular Economy Research Center (CERC). He has taught at the Rotterdam School of Management; the Audencia Nantes School of Management; the EADA School of Management; and Bradford University. On top of this, he has administered seminars and workshops at the Lorange Institute; the University of Perugia; and the Yancheng Institute of Technology, and several private business training centres in Europe and the Middle East.
Jonathan has written several business and management books, including: Fundamentals of Leisure Business Success (1998); The Concise Handbook of Management (2005); Managing the New Frontiers (2007); and The Sustainable Business (2010/2015/2018).
He also holds multiple degrees and certifications, including a Bachelor of Science, an MBA and MA in management, and a CELTA teaching certification from Oxford Brookes University.
Ilma Jabeen is a sustainability professional. She has researched and experimented with circular economy principles both at an academic and a practical level. Her work is truly at the forefront of circular economy, focusing on circular business models, cross-sector collaboration, energy transition and process management, where she tries to turn sustainability goals into practices.
In her pursuit to make building construction more sustainable and circular, she obtained a masters in Building Engineering and specialised in “Technology for Sustainable Development”. Ilma excels in analytical research, market analysis and stakeholder engagement, getting to grips with stakeholder needs in particular. In the past, she has worked with various stakeholders, including governments, contractors, manufacturers, waste management firms, and customers.
Walter Stahel has spent the last 40 years working on two topics of circular economy: sustainable business models, and risk management to prevent human and economic losses.
Walter was educated at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, where he received an MA in Architecture. He then worked as an architect in London and St. Moritz, and joined the Battelle Research centres in Geneva before moving into business.
He has been active as a manager and consultant to the C-suite of global businesses, academia, SMEs, NGOs, and government agencies on all continents. He has also written seminal books on the topics of the Circular Economy, the Performance Economy and the Limits to Certainty, which have been translated into numerous languages. His work has won him several awards, including two honorary doctorates and a nomination as Full Member of the Club of Rome.
He currently lives in Geneva, Switzerland, and is active as an author, keynote speaker, mentor, researcher, and teacher on his three topics. In 2020, Stahel was nominated as Senior Research Fellow at the Circular Economy Research Centre (CERC) of École des Ponts Business School in France.
